SIR GERRY showed his disappointing comeback in the Greenham 11 days previously to be all wrong and defied his 7lb penalty in ready fashion. The drop back in trip proved ideal, he goes well on an easy surface, and is clearly not the finished article. He produced a smart turn of foot to settle the issue nearing the final furlong and showed a willing attitude when out in front, despite idling somewhat.
This confirms him as a pure sprinter and he is no doubt Group class, but his opportunities are going to be much trickier from now on and he will be forced to takeon the older sprinters. It is not clear exactly where he will head next, although the Duke Of York at York next month was not totally ruled out, but it may well transpire that his best chance of further success comes later in the year as he has matured that bit further. As a four-year-old next year, however, he should really develop into a formidable sprinter.
Tajdeef, who signed off last year with an excellent third in the Group 1 Middle Park when well ahead of a below par Sir Gerry, was not helped by the lack of early pace and pulled hard through the first two furlongs as a result. He still turned in a very pleasing display in defeat, despite not confirming form with the penalised winner, and confirmed he has trained on from two-to-three. There will be other days for him.
Elizabeth Swann, the Fred Darling fourth, got outpaced at a crucial stage on this drop back a furlong before staying on again towards the finish and only just missed out on third place. She helps to set the level of this form.
Highland Daughter showed she has come on since her comeback effort in the Nell Gwyn a fortnight previously, but was still found out on this drop back to 6f and is not going to prove straightforward to place on this evidence.[DO]
