Baycat held up behind leaders, hung left and led over 1f out, kept on well, ridden out
Firth Of Fifth prominent, led over 2f out, ridden and headed over 1f out, kept on but always held by winner
Sun Ship led until over 2f out, ridden well over 1f out, kept on same pace final furlong
Grand Honour held up behind leaders, ridden over 2f out, one pace from over 1f out
Light The Fire slowly into stride and went left start, held up last but in touch, headway just over 2f out and edged slightly right, ridden over 1f out, weakened inside final furlong
Skid Solo awkward leaving stalls, soon prominent, ridden and slightly short of room just over 2f out, weakened over 1f out
Pride Of Kings prominent, ridden over 2f out, soon beaten
The penalised runners have fared very well in the past, however, and this year's running kept up the trend as BAYCAT followed up his Newbury maiden success 12days previously with another dogged success.
He took longer to find his full stride this time, and still looked distinctly green when asked to make his effort nearing 2f out, but he was always holding sway over his rivals when in front inside the final furlong.
In giving 4lb to the third, who filled the same place behind him on debut at level weights, this was clearly an improved showing and an easy surface is evidently to his liking.
It is not quite clear where he will now go in search of the hat-trick, but a return to the track Royal Meeting in June for something like the Norfolk Stakes will no doubt be tempting his connections now, and further improvement still looks on the cards. Whether he is really up to that sort of level is still obviously open to debate, but a step into Listed company now looks his best option.
Firth Of Fifth, placed on Polytrack on his previous two outings, was much better away from the gates this time and posted his best effort to date in defeat, keeping thewinner up to his work inside the closing stages. He has a maiden well within his compass, but again just left the impression he will ideally benefit more when the 6f races begin.
Grand Honour, the only other penalised runner in the field, was patiently ridden on this turf debut and came through to run his race. He is not going to be the easiest to place in the short term, but he still helps to put this form into perspective and has a future.
Light The Fire, the most expensive of these at the sales, proved very easy to back ahead of this racecourse debut yet posted a pleasing effort in defeat. He has some scope and looks sure to come on a bundle for the experience, so is one to take from the race with the future in mind.
The big disappointment was Skid Solo, odds-on to get off the mark at the first time of asking when second to Baycat at Newbury last time, he never looked likely to getinvolved here after a sluggish start. He now has it all to prove and his Group 1 entry looks most ambitious at this stage.
Pride Of Kings, who holds a Derby entry for next year, has speed in his pedigree and knew his job as he broke well from the gates. He was in trouble from 2f out, however, and is going to need to come on plenty for the race if he is to be getting his head in front at any stage in the near future.[DO]
