The torrential rain proved a boon for BUDDY HOLLY who survived a dramatic swerve right as he hung under Pat Dobbs when already clear of Air Chief approaching the distance.

The winner had already mastered his rival and, though the manoeuvre cost him ground, such was his superiority that he was still a wide-margin scorer over the staying-on King Bathwick.

His trainer Pat Eddery said: "Pat [Dobbs] said at Nottingham he wanted a mile and a quarter and today he''s improved again."

Backersof Air Chief might feel aggrieved that Buddy Holly carried him across the course, but although it might have cost the top weight his prospects of a place finish, his measure had already been taken. A scorer over this course and distance last week, Air Chief looked to be going as well as Buddy Holly turning in, but what ensued shows that the handicapper has now got hold of him.

Double On Red stepped-up on previous efforts this season to arrive late for minor money. Hadron Collider looked to have a stiff task and didn''t necessarily act on the ground.

Mista Rossa, a springer in the market in the morning, was closeenough to the action turning in, but quickly beat a retreat.
