LUSH LASHES had been only sixth at Newmarket and most recently only fifth when favourite for the Oaks. However, she looked uncomfortable on the track both times, particularly at Epsom, and the way she finished at Newmarket, not to mention her impressive win in the Musidora at York in between, showed she has a good engine. She travelled well here, always nicely placed, with a good view of the leader, and although she was challenged by Infallible almost as soon as she got to the front, she saw out the final furlong much the better. She pulled away for a most decisive success, the second in two days from fillies who failed to enjoy the track in the Oaks.
Like her stablemate New Approach, Lush Lashes is tough, although Jim Bolger said he had not given her any fast work since the Guineas. She also takes after him in terms of versatility, and having confirmed herself a top-class 1m to 1m2f filly, she will bid to make up for the disappointment of Epsom in the Irish equivalent. The more conventional track will be a big plus, and in the anticipated absence of Look Here, she will be the one to beat if the ground remains on top.
Newmarket fourth Infallible was well fancied again, although connections had reservations about the suitability of the very quick ground. Held up on the inner near the back of the field, there was a danger she might get trapped starting up the straight, but Jimmy Fortune extricated her in good time and she showed good tactical speed between the 2f and 1f markers to get almost upsides Lush Lashes. The final furlong of this stiffish mile found her out, though, and Lush Lashes pulled right away. A less demanding 1m or 7f will suit her better, and so probably will easier ground.
Spacious had done best of these in second at Newmarket, and many people expected her to have made the most improvement. In that context she was disappointing in fourth, because she couldn't quicken like her owners' other runner Infallible, and she was also inclined to lug to the right, away from the whip. Connections, who felt she lacked a bit of sparkle, will play it by ear.
Muthabara has taken time getting her coat and still wasn't among the more attractive members of the field. She was a bit keen early but kept on for a respectable fifth. She looks worth a try over further.
Very different tactics were adopted on the unlucky Newmarket fifth Nahoodh, who was making her debut for owner and trainer. She was taken straight to the front, but once joined in the straight she had little more to offer. This was her second disappointment since the Guineas.
Psalm, still a maiden but a talented one, was inclined tohang right but kept on. She is by Sadler's Wells and probably prefers more give underfoot.
It was a big step up in class for the progressive Raymi Coya, who found it beyond her at this stage, but Tuscan Evening, who had excelled herself at theCurragh, should have run a lot better.
French challenger Modern Look, a Group 2 winner at Chantilly since her French Guineas fourth, was struggling to hold her place when she was tightened up between the winner and Carribean Sunset.
The Italian Guineas winner Love Of Dubai has had a very busy time and trailed the field.
*Stephane Pasquier reported that Modern Look lost her action. [GD]
