YOUNG GLADIATOR had run well enough to be placed in three maidens prior to this outing, earning a mark of 62 in theprocess. With the only higher-rated runner in the field not running anywhere near his peg, Julie Camacho's gelding only had to reproduce his best to win, and he duly scored in convincing fashion despite running around a little in front.
Connections describe him as a grinder lacking a turn of foot, but they hope that he will improve for turf. He will get a chance to prove them right in a Newcastle handicap on Monday.
Tanley was always in the front rank after breaking well and he boxed on in admirable fashion to take second.
Cheveton showed big improvement to be second at Wolverhampton on his second start, but he was not as good here. However, he got a face full of kickback after finding himself in behind runners and, given that he did stay on in the closing stages, he will be worth considering again now handicapped.
One particularly smart juvenile effort earned L'Art Du Silence a mark of 68, but he continues to look nowhere near that good. He was beaten before the straight had been entered on this occasion, but it is possible he did not take to his first-time eyeshields.
