These races are something of a novelty, but this one tends to be reasonably competitive within its rating band. It was ashame that dual winner AP McCoy missed the race, as he was the only jumps jockey to have succeeded in six runnings of the race, but in a finish in which the six Flat riders were in the first seven it was still a jumps jockey who prevailed, with Gold Cup-winning rider Sam Thomas bringing veteran BUSTAN up the rail to get the best of a four-way photo and succeed for the first time in two years, and for only the third time in his career.
A Listed winner in his prime, Bustan has his problems nowadays and has become hard to win with, but Thomas gave him a fine ride, keeping him reasonably handy on the rail from the start as Daaweitza cut out the running, squeezing him through the narrowest of gaps going to the furlong marker and then persuading him to put his best foot forward in a thrilling finish. However, the nine-year-old's previous two wins came five years apart, so he is not one to take short odds about next time.
Last month's all-weather claiming winner Cactus King ran right up to form, leading briefly entering the final furlong, and so did Blacktoft, who came from behind under a typically strong ride from Ryan Moore. The first four were clear of Froissee, who was dropped in and heldup from her draw towards the outside, and Golden Prospect, who had been held up in last.
Long-time leader Daaweitza was weakening when he was squeezed out and snatched up inside the final furlong. Rebellious Spirit had his chance. The drying ground would not have been in his favour and he has had a very busy time. [GD]
