Colony held up in last pair, progress on outer from over 2f out, sustained effort and ridden to lead last 100yds, soon clear
Midships led at decent pace, pressed 3f out, stayed on well, headed and outpaced last 100yds
Conduit took keen hold early, held up towards rear, effort on inner over 2f out, progress and got thorugh over 1f out, took 3rd near finish but not pace to challenge
Pacifism pulled hard, held up behind leaders, hanging badly right from over 2f out, kept on despite being hard to keep straight
Captain Webb took keen hold, prominent, went 2nd 4f out, ridden to challenge 3f out and wandered, not quicken final 2f and steadily lost place
Safari Sunup settled in rear, hard ridden and effort 2f out, kept on but unable to reach leaders
Harry Gee dropped in to last from wide draw, pushed along on inner over 2f out, sharp reminder over 1f out, kept on steadily
Trenchtown tracked leader after 2f to 4f out, weakened over 2f out
Dona Alba held up behind leaders, progress to chase leading pair over 2f out to over 1f out, weakened
Cossack Prince chased leader 2f, close up until steadily weakened from over 2f out
City Of The Kings in touch until weakened well over 2f out, tailed off
It revolved to an extent around unbeaten top-weight Captain Webb, who was still 8lb well in with the penalty for his runaway Brighton win, but having been dropped in on the rail, where he raced a bit keenly, he could never get to the front in this infinitely hotter company and faded in the closing stages.
Sir Michael Stoute set a poser by saddling two lightly raced colts from good families at the foot of the handicap, and although Conduit was the one for the early money, his stablemate COLONY was clearly not unfancied. Held up one from the back, Colony was still disputing last three furlongs out, but he then began a run on the outside which took him to front well inside the final furlong. Although he is by Statue of Liberty, there is stamina on the dam's side, and he will stay 1m4f if required.
The pair were divided by long-time leader Midships, who confirmed the promise of his debut win with a good effort.
Lingfield all-weather winner Pacifism looked a difficult ride and hung so badly through the last two furlongs that his rider was unable to get the best out of him. He has the ability if it can be harnessed.
Safari Sunup looked more exposed than most and ran well under his big weight, but it will not be easy for him off a mark of 90.
There was a gap back to Harry Gee, but he ran a lot betterthan his finishing position suggests and was staying on quite nicely up the rail, having been dropped out at the back of the field.
