Analyis of the race

The time tended to support the official view of the ground, but it's worth bearing in mind that the bend into the straight looked to be out about as far as it can go. This is traditionally a very strong three-year-old handicap, and there is no reason to think this latest running is any different, because it featured strong early-season form from the current campaign, plus plenty of relatively lightly raced horses with the scope to improve considerably on last year's form. The principals at the finish, inwhich three of the first four had been in the first four throughout, were a mixture of both.

COMMANDER CAVE was making his turf debut and was 8lb higher than when he won at Kempton last time, but he came here in top form and confirmed he is still improving with another convincing success. He tracked Cobo Bay, and when he was eased out to challenge two furlongs out he was soon in charge, although he was never going to win by very far. Richard Hughes said the winner was possibly in front too soon and was inclined to pull up.

Unbreak My Heart had won his last two races at two and is another highly progressive sort. Having settled well at the rear of the field, he did not make his move until around two furlongs out, but he kept on well and ran the winner close. He got the trip well and will improve.

Cobo Bay was still 2lb well in with the penalty for last week's all-the-way Ripon win, but he was up against some unexposed rivals here and was unable to repeat the tactics, though he ran pretty well. Ease in the ground is evidently important to him, and he may be hard to place.

Stubbs Art was even keener, proving very hard to settle. He has 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace entries and looked on a good mark, but he will need to relax if he is to fulfil his potential.

Jedediah had no easy task under joint top weight on his seasonal reappearance. He was never involved but looks very much the type to improve for a race.

Hawaana had a stiff task on his bare form, but a Derby entry and heavy backing in the morning suggested he was much better than his mark. He was travelling well starting up the straight and looked wellplaced to launch a challenge, but his effort was shortlived and he was in trouble two furlongs out. This was disappointing, but he might be worth another chance back on faster ground.

Dalkey Girl has had a very busy time and made little appeal in this company.

Traphalgar has shown by far his best form on artificial surfaces.
