Fast Fred steadied start, in rear, hampered and fell 5th

City Music in rear, behind from 6th, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out

Plenty needed a leap of faith to support in this typically less-than-competitive conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle, and there were only four in it off the home turn.

DORIS’S GIFT had been a long-standing maiden but had been in fair form, and the first-time blinkers and drying ground may both have helped him as he led from the sixth flight and came home a comfortable winner. This was a modest event, but he will escape a penalty and has fair prospects of following up.

Ortega came from behind to take second place two out, but he never threatened the winner. However, he came well clear of the rest and this was at least an improvement on recent efforts.

Herald Angel weakened before two out and may have been anchored by a 14lb rise for his Fontwell success, while Harley continues below form. Izzykeen ran on all too late.
