This was a decent novice hurdle containing five previous hurdle winners, as well as a number of no-hopers.
CRESCENT ISLAND was the form pick on his second to the smart Elusive Dream at Cheltenham a week earlier and he ran out a comfortable winner to record his second victory over hurdles. He jumped to the front at the first flight in the home straight and drew clear after two out.
He should strengthen over the summer and will make a nice novice chaser next season.
Evelith Echo had some useful form earlier in the campaign and was returning after three months' absence. He had no problem withthe trip and stayed on to go second at the final flight without ever troubling the winner. He still has room for improvement in his jumping technique.
Java Victory did not show much in a bumper just after Christmas but shaped with definite promise on this hurdlingdebut and can probably win a race at one of the minor tracks.
Winner of a point-to-point before showing promise in a novice chase, The Spieler was appearing for the first time since December 2005 and made a pleasing return to action. Patiently ridden, he closed in the back straight but was held in fourth place when stumbling after the second-last. He has evidently been hard to train but he clearly retains ability.
Bertie May was well held under his penalty but is another who should make a name for himself over fences.
