Victree, without cheekpieces this time, travelled well through the race, and having gone clear early on the final circuit he was still five lengths in front going to two out. However, he made a shocking blunder there and turned almost sideways on landing, giving his rider little chance of staying on board. WALTON WAY, who was never far away, was in second at the time, and with two of the three immediately behind him also departing at the same fence he was left to come home a long way clear of Roddy The Vet. First impressions were that he was lucky. However, his rider was evidently adamant he would have won anyway, and it’s true that he had yet to really go for him, and that he was closing gradually. It might well have been close anyway.
Miss Doublet led until Victree took over, but she looked hard work and Wayne Kavanagh had to try everything to keep her interested. There was some awful jumping among some of those who failed to complete, and among the more fancied runners Croc An Oir made a bad blunder at the eleventh, while Historic Place was never fluent and had dropped right out by the time he unseated.
