HADDAAF was a well-bred under-achiever on the Flat for John Dunlop, but he shaped a lot better on his reappearance over hurdles at Kempton last month and this was a simple opportunity for him. Ridden with plenty of confidence, he made smooth headway down the far side, and having going after the leader approaching two out he was soon in charge and won as he pleased. He was reportedly a naughty boy on the Flat but is a reformed character since he was gelded. Connections might be tempted now to have another go on the Flat, as he is rated only 67.
Ardmaddy won on the Flat in February but is very ordinary over hurdles. The Nicky Henderson newcomer Calgary Jock was very easy to back, despite the weakness of the opposition. He pulled his way into a prominent position but was quickly put in his place in the straight.
