This race usually features either a Hannon or Channon winner and some useful sorts have won this including Group-racer Hurricane Alan, while last year's winner, Cracking, was no slouch, winning the Lily Agnes and being rated in the mid-90s. This did not look a bad renewal and the way the first two cleared away through the final furlong marks them down as above average.
SMOKEY STORM was too green to do himself justice in the first juvenile race at Windsor two weeks ago and he was again finishing off strongly to suggest another furlong will suit. He is not very big and connections mentioned the (Listed) Woodcote at Epsom as a possible target with his handling of this similar track sure to be a plus. He may not ultimately be quite up to that level but he should win more races.
Brenin Taran did not help his cause by being too keen early up with the hard-pulling Entrancer. He still looked to have taken a winning lead into the final furlong and was only nailed on the line. He showed he had learnt plenty from his debut in a good Newmarket race and should soon make amends.
Lagan Handout has not gone on from a good fourth in the Brocklesby with winners having come from behind him there. He still looks worth keeping on the right side as he will get further and tucked in behind the early pace, he did not get running room when needed but plugged on.
Old Father Zieten played up in the prelims, getting excitable but settled down when his rider mounted, although he swerved away from the rail halfway to the start. No surprise that he was green and outpaced through the early stages but he stayed on takingly in the final furlong to suggest if this debut settles him down, he will win his races, especially when getting a more suitable trip.
