Slugger O´Toole tracked leaders, raced keenly, switched left over 1f out, led inside final furlong, shaken up and ran on well
Skadrak tracked leader, raced keenly, ridden and every chance inside final furlong, unable to quicken towards finish
August Gale soon led, ridden over 1f out, headed inside final furlong, stayed on same pace
James Dean prominent, raced keenly, ridden over 2f out, hung left over 1f out, stayed on same pace
Novellen Lad slowly into stride, held up, headway halfway, ridden over 2f out, stayed on same pace approaching final furlong
Cheney Manor held up, never near to challenge
Little Molly held up in touch, weakened halfway
SLUGGER O'TOOLE had made an encouraging return to action when fourth in a useful looking Newmarket maiden earlier in the month, and he built on that recent run with a comfortable enough success. He had been unruly in the preliminaries in the past (he was pulled out of his intended debut at Yarmouth) but showed no signs of a dodgy temperament here. He should go on to better in time.
Skadrak was left in the 2,000 Guineas earlier in the week, so he must have been showing his connections something. He had been uneasy in the betting but still had every chance a furlong out although he was no match for the winner.
The remainder were led home by James Dean, who ran respectably, finishing one place in front of Novellen Lad, who raced keen when they went at a steady pace early on.
There was plenty to like about the debutante Cheney Manor. A big sort, he was not given a hard time by his inexperienced rider before keeping on in the closing stages. He looks like one to keep an eye on.
