This field looked well up to standard and the race followed the trend of falling to a 4yo with a pair of them fighting out the finish. The downside with this renewal is that the placed horses have crept to high-looking marks in defeat. The other disappointment was that few got into the race and only the first four were going on at the finish with the next few weakening but still finishingahead of some late closers.
CABINET had been a long way behind Eradicate in a decent Haydock handicap last year (runner-up Philatelist won the Rosebery recently) on faster ground. He progressed after that and has come back in good form against fitter rivals, so deserves rating a better winner than the bare form. He was wanting to hang left as he gave chase to Eradicate into the final furlong and only just edged past.
Eradicate, who got over-rated into the 100s last year but still ran well in some of the big 3yo handicaps, has come back in good form this season off his lower mark which is starting to edge up in defeat and could do so again.
Heaven Knows did not have the run of the race and was noted make good progress from the rear. He is another who has edged up the handicap but his long raking run up the straight from an unpromising position turning in suggests he is ready to strike, although he clearly enjoys cut in the ground.
Tears Of The Clown, another making his seasonal reappearance, shaped with promise of better to come. Suits Me set the pace but was legless inside the final furlong but still held the tail-end closers. This trip on this ground looks to stretch his stamina. Mull Of Dubai, who is coming down the handicap, was running on when it was all over, having sat last alongside Best Prospect, well out of their ground in a steadily-run race.
Northern Jem was another who struggled for stamina over this trip on this ground after travelling well chasing the pace on the rail. Longspur ran a shade better than the bare form and this lightly-raced all-weather maiden winner, having his first run in a handicap and for his new trainer, can progress from this. [BJ]
