Fervent Prince had disappointed connections with his attitude last year but gelding him seems to have done the trick. Conceding race-fitness to his closest rivals, he put in a powerful run when in the clear. This was a much-improved effort by this half-brother to the useful Intrepid Jack, suggesting he is ahead of the handicapper.
Totally Focussed travelled well off the fast pace and stayed on well but could not quite open his account, although a maiden should be a formality.
The first five finished nicely clear of the rest, with Naughty Frida edging closer when it was all over in the final furlong. This was a shade disappointing after her decent run behind subsequent Greenham winner Paco Boy.
Yamal, who took the clear outside route on this second start, could not quite match the pace of the principals but was not losing any more ground in the final furlong. Still inexperienced and open to improvement, he can make amends in a race likely to throw up more than its fair share of winners.
Just Like A Woman was staying on through the second division when it was all over, suggesting another furlong might suit, while Bombardier Wells can be forgiven the run as he was badly hampered out of the back straight.
