Rock ´N´ Roller held up towards rear, headway 7f out, shaken up to chase leader well over 1f out, led and hung right briefly over 1f out, kept on final furlong
Ashmolian held up in last pair, headway on outer 3f out, ridden just over 2f out, chased winner inside final furlong, kept on but always held
Sister Agnes chased leader until 6f out and again over 2f out, ridden and tried to challenge just over 2f out, outpaced final furlong
Best Selection behind, ridden over 3f out, kept on under pressure to go 4th inside final furlong, never troubled leaders
Icannshift led, ridden and headed over 1f out, soon weakened
Madam Vouvray in touch in midfield, ridden over 4f out, no headway 2f out, beaten and eased final furlong
Great View in touch until dropped to rear 5f out, no danger after
Lupita in touch, chased leader 6f out until over 2f out, soon ridden and immediately beaten, virtually pulled up final furlong
This looks very ordinary form. ROCK ’N’ ROLLER had not shone in two previous runs over this sort of trip, but under a typically patient ride from George Baker he got to the front over a furlong out and then did enough once in front. His options are broader now he has shown he gets a trip.
Ashmolian made his ground on the outer approaching the home turn, and while he could never quite get to the winner he came well clear of the third. This was a good effort from 7lb out of the handicap, but his proximity hardly advertises the form.
Best Selection, third over 2m at Kempton two starts previously, looked in big trouble at the back of the field down the back straight but eventually stayed on for fourth, ahead of course specialist Icannshift, who was trying a new trip and looked a non stayer, and Madam Vouvray, who came under pressure halfway down the back.
Favourite Lupita was one of the few proven stayers, having won over further at Bath recently, but having raced handily she stopped quickly approaching the straight. Something was obviously amiss, and it emerged that she had finished distressed.
