Hereford Boy held up in touch, switched right just over 1f out, pushed along and quickened to lead last 100yds, soon in command, readily
Corridor Creeper led for 1f, led again well over 1f out, ridden 1f otu, headed last 100yds, not pace of winner
Pretty Miss dropped in behind after start, not much room from over 1f out, headway just inside final furlong, ran on but never able to challenge
Idle Power held up in touch in rear, switched right and effort over 1f out, no impression final furlong
For Life chased leader until led after 1f, ridden and headed well over 1f out, one pace final furlong
Zowington chased leading pair, ridden and effort over 1f out, outpaced final furlong
Spanish Ace always behind, ridden over 2f out, no chance over 1f out, eased well inside final furlong
HEREFORD BOY was quietly progressive last year, and he was a bit unlucky to be caught on the line at Windsor last week, having come through to win his race. Heldup again, his rider had to be patient, but when a gap appeared between Corridor Creeper and the weakening Zowington he zipped through it and won really well.
Connections hope to get him far enough up the handicap to get into the Stewards’ Cup, and if they manage that he ought to win another two or three on the way. He is a most likeable type and the sort the Handicapper may have difficulty getting to grips with.
Corridor Creeper was rated 112 at his peak and he was on 98 just 12 months ago. Nowdown to just 79, he showed speed when fourth in Hereford Boy’s Windsor race and he did so once again here, although once again he was no match for him inside the final furlong. With the stable sending out its first winner in eight months earlier in the afternoon he might just be able to take advantage of his plummeting mark one day soon.
Pretty Miss had a tough task from stall seven on an afternoon when the rail was the place to be, and she was unlucky not to give the winner more of a race. Dropped in to race against the rail, she travelled well but had nowhere to go until For Life started to lose his place in the final furlong. With a better draw or a clearer run she would have been second at least.
For Life is another who wants a bit further, and he had been off the track six months since winning four of his last five races in 2007. He was far from disgraced.
Zowington is 8lb lower than when making a winning reappearance at Epsom two years ago, but he ran only four times last year and had been off the track nearly ten months. He was entitled to need this, and that’s how he ran.
Spanish Ace, a stablemate of Corridor Creeper, lost his way after a good start to 2007 and lacked a recent race. He did not show much but he stayed on the outer and he will be sharper for the run.
