Thannaan made all, clear over 1f out, 5 lengths clear 100yds, eased well inside final furlong and nearly caught
Mega Watt dropped in after start, held up well in rear, still modest 12th 3f out, headway over 1f out, stayed on to chase winner inside final furlong, nearly caught winner napping
Speyside held up in midfield, outpaced 3f out, switched to centre and headway 2f out, stayed on steadily to go 3rd inside final furlong, never near enough to challenge
Simarian slowly into stride, soon chasing leaders, outpaced 3f out, kept on same pace last 2f
Oarsman chased leading pair, chase winner and clear of remainder well over 2f out, weakened over 1f out, lost 3 places inside final furlong
Kannon slowly into stride, soon chasing winner until well over 2f out, soon outpaced, plugged on
Carmela Maria dropped in after start, held up well behind, switched right well over 1f out, kept on, never near leaders
Earlsmedic in touch on outer, outpaced 3f out, kept on same pace after
Contrada held up behind, ridden and struggling 3f out, some modest late headway
Royal Bloom behind, outpaced 3f out, some headway well over 1f out, never on terms
Poulaine Bleue chased leaders, ridden and outpaced over 3f out, no chance last 2f
Star Choice chased leaders until ridden and outpaced 3f out, no chance last 2f, tailed off
Emerging Light always behind, lost touch 3f out, tailed off
Bakers Boy behind, ridden and hung right over 3f out, soon lost touch, tailed off
There were two or three interesting propositions here, but the betting suggested it was a straight match. It looked as if it might turn out that way too when THANNAAN and Oarsman were both in the trio that were clear of the pack going to two out, but Oarsman, who was a beaten favourite here three weeks previously, and Kannon both cracked over a furlong out, seemingly leaving Thannaan to come home alone. The grey went four or five lengths clear and, having had a good look over his right shoulder and a glance over his left, Richard Hills started to ease him down well inside the final furlong. However, Mega Watt was finishing like a train up the fence, and in another stride or two he would have been caught. His future now lies in handicaps, and he can probably be rated as having won by a couple of lengths.
Mega Watt made his debut in a good maiden last year and looks the part, but he was poorly drawn and soon towards the back of the field, dropped in to race close to the rail. He had only two behind him three out, and it wasn’t much better a furlong later, but he got an uninterrupted run up the rail and flew the final furlong, making ground hand over fist.
There was a big gap back to Speyside, who was making his turf debut, but he shaped well nevertheless and is now eligible for a handicap mark too.
Simarian, another who was having his third run, will be easier to place in handicaps now, but it’s hard to know what to make of Oarsman, who lost three places in the final furlong and is starting to look disappointing. His stablemate Contrada is arguably the more interesting prospect now, for while he was never on terms he was handicapped by his wide draw and he was not knocked about. He is eligible for a mark too now, and he can hardly be punished on racecourse achievement.
Carmela Maria finished nicely in seventh and is another who could be interesting one day, although she needs a third run still for a mark.
