Miltons Choice led after 1f, made rest, clear just over 1f out, stayed on well
Reigning Monarch chased leaders, with winner halfway, ridden and slightly outpaced well over 1f out, kept on same pace final furlong
Ali Bruce slowly into stride, held up behind, headway and ridden well over 2f out, kept on under pressure to go 3rd well inside final furlong, not trouble leading pair
Mugeba slowly into stride, held up towards rear, headway 3f out, chased leading pair and ridden well over 1f out, outpaced final furlong
Ever Cheerful chased leaders ridden well over 2f out, weakened just over 1f out
Flight Dream went left start, always towards rear, ridden over 3f out, no chance last 2f
Thomas Lawrence bumped start, always behind, ridden over 3f out, no chance last 2f
Exponential led for 1f out, ridden and lost place over 3f out, soon weakened, no chance last 2f
Arfinnit chased leaders until lost place and ridden 3f out, no chance last 2f
The stands’ rail has been favoured here up the straight course this year, and it is surely no coincidence that the first three in this open handicap were drawn 1, 3 and 2.
MILTONS CHOICE had not run for 395 days and represented a stable that had not had a Flat winner for eight months, but he broke well and showed good speed throughout, racing close to the rail. A soft-ground winner off a higher mark first time out two years ago, he was by no means a hopeless case on his old form and if he comes out of this all right he could well win again, although the immediate reaction was that he would not run quickly without a penalty.
Reigning Monarch was well drawn, too, for a horse who likes to race prominently, but his rider was content to take a lead this time. He never quite looked like getting on terms with the winner, but beat the rest well enough.
The winner’s stablemate Exponential won this last year off a 12lb higher mark and would reportedly give Miltons Choice a five-length start at home. He did not show much, but might be interesting before long if this signals a general return to form for the stable.
