Analyis of the race

The first two-year-old maiden of the year is usually a guessing game until the market settles and winner COOL TARIFA certainly didn’t go unbacked in the ring. She travelled smoothly in behind and her rider had to bide his time, but once daylight appeared she quickened nicely to establish the advantage inside the final furlong and kept on well justifying support from 14-1 to 6-1 in the process. Her trainer purchased the winner for E20,000 at Goffs last year, which looks a bargain now, and if handling better ground she should be able to build on this pleasing performance. She’ll step up to tackle the Swordlestown Sprint at the Naas next with Royal Ascot in June figuring also in plans.

Comadoir, a son of Alexander Goldrun’s half-brother Medecis out of a maiden Phone Trick mare, led two furlongs out until the winner arrived with her challenge. From the family of Galantas, placed in a Grade 1 in the US last year, he should improve from this display on a sounder surface.

Ah Joe raced prominently until dropping right out along with Midsummer Bond and Anam Cairde who both broke smartly, while Eaochair was slowly away and made little impression. [BF]
