La Vecchia Scuola held up, smooth headway 4 out, led going well before last, shaken up and quickened clear run-in, readily
Super Formen set decent gallop to before last, no chance with winner
Mr Crystal chased clear leading pair, outpaced before 4 out, rallied next, no impression
Quick Will held up, driven 4 out, never able to challenge
Currahee pressed leader until ridden and weakened from 4 out
Act Sirius held up, driven 5th, lost touch from next
LA VECCHIA SCUOLA is a remarkable filly. Successful in a bobbing finish under top-weight in a competitive handicap here 24 hours earlier, she turned-out again for this above-average novice event and turned it into a procession. The pace was a brisk one, thanks to Super Formen, pressed by Currahee, the pair building up a healthylead. The eventual winner was again ridden patiently, but, after Currahee had weakened sharply, she made smooth headway at the end of the back straight to go in pursuit of Super Formen. Drawing alongside three out, she was still on the bridle and, still to be asked a question, she went on approaching the final flight and, when shaken-up, quickly drew clear.
A 5f winner on the Flat last summer, she has proved that all sorts make the grade over hurdles. And, in her case, she has clearly developed into aserious talent. She now heads to Punchestown to bid for a Euro 100,000 mares’ race on Saturday.
Mr Crystal, not seen since December, was unable to get in a telling blow and, with his measure taken from the home-turn, he just got the better of Quick Will in a great battle for third prize, albeit well adrift of the runner-up.
Currahee, wearing a first-time tongue-tie, paid the price for trying to mix it with the bold-running Super Formen. Act Sirius, back in action after ten weeks off, ran as though might have been amiss. (TO’R)
