However, in a race that had only five finishers, it was the 2005 Cheltenham Gold Cup second TAKE THE STAND who emerged triumphant after getting the better of Merchants Friend in a rousing battle through the closing stages.
Take The Stand had won his first chase for four years at Newbury last month, but that came on soft ground, which has never suited the 12-year-old, who was even better on the quicker conditions he faced here. He has been, and remains, a grand servant to the sport.
Merchants Friend found the Cheltenham hill just too muchwhen he threw away a seemingly unassailable lead in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup of 2004, and the final incline again proved his nemesis. However, another contributing factor was that his rider dropped his whip soon after the final fence.
Lou Du Moulin Mas was on the heels of the winner when crashing out at the fourth-last, where Sleeping Night was brought down. The latter had been under a shove for some time but was still not beaten when forced out of the contest.
Foxhunter runner-up Bon Accord was a significant flop on this occasion and was beaten early on the second circuit.
