ONE GULP, a Grade 2 second at Doncaster in January, was subsequently just as good when eighth to Nenuphar Collonges in an admittedly weak Grade 1 at the festival here last month.
Seemingly in no way hindered by being dropped back from 3m, she raced in mid-division before pulling clear alongside Magical Legend, who did her best to stop One Gulp by hampering her approaching the final flight.
To her credit, One Gulp overcame that interference and in the closing stages was always just getting the best of the argument, thanks in no small part to a fine drive from Dominic Elsworth.
She is a very worthy Listed winner, who should reap further rewards in the big mares' races next season.
Magical Legend, an early faller in the David Nicholson Hurdle at the festival, got the chance to show her worth on this occasion and did not let connections down.
She was receiving only 3lb from the winner prior to her rider's claim being taken into account and continues to progress, despite having had a lot of racing.
The Oliver Sherwood-trained mare may not have been helped by the drying ground, as she had been so effective in a swamp at Newbury, but it is equally likely the 15lb hikeshe received for that Newbury win was simply too much for her to overcome.
Brook No Argument ran okay but never really threatened to complete a hat-trick, while the classy Gaspara has had some hard races this season, and may have been feeling the effects here.
Katess had no chance after making a terrible mid-race mistake but still performed better than Blaeberry, who ran a shocker on her return to hurdles.
Amber Brook and Safari Run were both in the process of challengingfor third when making late exits, the former at the final flight, the latter just before it.
