EZDIYAAD was one of the least exposed in the field, having been a somewhat unlucky third in a handicap at Goodwood after his Newmarket maiden win, and as he was proven on soft ground and looked very much the type to improve from three to four he had to be on the shortlist.
A half-brother to the extremely able Makderah, who was a good Graded scorer in the States after proving a tricky ride and failing to reach the heights she once aspired to here, the winner is massive (an inch bigger than Denman according to the trainer) and he did not look entirely straightforward here as he raced keenly up with the pace and has an awkward head carriage. However, once he was sent on, racing up the middle of the track, he only faced one serious challenge, and he was well on top at the finish, shapingas he will be even better over 1m4f. He is one to keep on the right side of.
Curzon House ran well in third, finishing a long way clear of Jeer, who seems all the better for being gelded in the winter and came from a long way back.
Dzesmin came from even further back and shaped quite promisingly over a trip on the short side for him, especially as he was making his reappearance without the cheekpieces he usually wears, but Doncaster winner Granston didn’t seem to get the trip in the ground.
Further back the market leaders were both disappointing. Bee Sting handled the ground at Chester last June, but he had not run since and was making his handicap debut.
Celtic Change’s form suggested aserious stamina doubt in this ground, and that’s how it looked. Both are worth another chance. (GD)
