Paco Boy tracked leaders, shaken up and quickened to track leader over 1f out, led final 100yds, readily
Bobs Surprise led, ridden and kept on from over 1f out, headed final 100yds, kept on well but not pace of winner
Red Alert Day in touch, headway 3f out, ridden to chase leaders 2f out, outpaced inside final furlong
Shallal chased leader, ridden over 2f out, weakened final furlong
Confront chased leaders, ridden over 2f out, soon beaten
Beacon Lodge in rear but in touch, ridden and effort 3f out, never reached leaders and weakened 2f out
Sir Gerry held up in rear, ridden and little response over 2f out
Without A Prayer stumbled stalls, soon in touch, ridden 3f out, soon weakened
Paddock inspection confirmed the impression that this was a poor relative of the Newmarket trial and the weak effort of top-rated Sir Gerry devalues the form even further. It may still turn out to be up to its Group3 status, but is more likely to throw up a Jersey winner than a Group 1 and many shaped like sprinters in the making.
Paco Boy put his race fitness to full use - all the others were making their seasonal returns - and maintains his most progressive profile. His Listed win on the all-weather last time was impressive and this was comfortable enough, and his quickening on the softest ground he has encountered was decent. He remains an unexposed horse, admirably adaptable to all conditions, and the way hewent to the line suggests 1m should be within his scope.
Bobs Surprise looked fittest of the returning runners and ran accordingly. He set a steady early pace, but left the rest behind comprehensively in his private battle with the winner, which saw them record a much quicker time than the fillies’ trial. Off longer than the rest since his beating in the Richmond at Goodwood, he deserves plenty of credit, but shapes more like a sprinter in the making.
Shallal, who has not developed much over the winter, showed pace, but dropped away on unsuitable ground and looks a pure sprinter in the making. His rider reported the colt hung right.
Confront looked most backward of these, but it was still disappointing that he blew up with two furlongs to run after moving into contention. He has plenty to prove after this tame effort as he has handled ease in the ground in winning last backend.
Beacon Lodge, who looked well, was quite keen early under hold-up tactics and found disappointingly little when let down. He has plenty to prove on this showing.
Connections could give the inquiring stewards no explanation for Sir Gerry's tame effort. He was settled well off the pace, but when asked to creep closer, there was only a brief response and he was beating a retreat before the final furlong. He is another who has not developed much over the winter and could be a pure sprinter. (BJ)
