They went a sensible pace in the conditions, so the big distances at the front of this finish strongly suggests some useful performers in a maiden which has a rich tradition - last year's winner, Diamond Tycoon, ran an honourable ninth in the Guineas, runner-up Lucarno went on to win the St Leger and the sixth, Pipedreamer, won the Cambridgeshire off a mark of 102.
This might not be such a strong race in depth, at least, with the form of the third and fourth casting doubt over the overall form, although there were others behind who can improve past them.
MOYENNE CORNICHE is a first foal of classy relatives and 1m with some cut in the ground suits admirably. He is an imposing colt with strenthening up to come and as such he can progress considerably from what was still an impressive victory.
The winner has clearly done well over the winter and was full value for the wide margin, running green when just pushed out after a couple of smacks. If runner-up French Art, bringing Craven winner Twice Over form to the table, can be rated as having run his race then bookmakers have seriously underrated Moyenne Corniche's 2,000 Guineas credentials, with Irish firms Paddy Power and Boylesports going 50-1, while British counterparts are generally 40-1. Connections were making the right noises about considering the Group 1 Classic in two weeks time. It remains a big ask, straight from maiden company, but this colt looks the part and a stronger-run race should suit.
French Art was fresh going to startunder a tight hold and after taking an early bump, he got lit up and pulled fiercely off the steady pace. He still quickened up nicely to join issue, but did not see which way the winner went into the final furlong. He still held second well and gives the form a solid look. If he settles down, he should win a decent contest.
Longevity was always in the firing line, and after being headed and looking like being swallowed up by the pack, rallied. His future will dependhow the handicapper rates this maiden.
Eqbaal shaped with promise on this belated racecourse debut. He raced on the midtrack wing of the pack and ran green and got outpaced as the tempo increased inside the last three furlongs, but he was getting the hang of things late on and, as his breeding suggests, this trip was a bare minimum. He can improve more than most on the bare form, although Dante and Derby entries are whimsical.
Mooted took the eye as another likely improver from this debut effort. He travelled well before getting tired and toiling in the ground. There should be better to come on good ground.
Blue Spartan, another big individual like the winner, was far too green to do himself justice. After running green when pushed along, he was crossed by another runner which put him off, but he was staying on to good effect in the final furlong to strongly suggest better to come next time.
East Drive travelled well through the race, but after getting onto the heels of the leaders two furlongs out, he got tired on this debut. On the face of it he shaped as if sprinting on better ground might suit.
Carbon Print got outpaced from halfway, but he was plugging on to suggest he can improve with time and distance and a similar remark applies to Forget It, another of the bigger sorts in this mixed maiden.
Mohathab and Daddy's Boy did not look overly happy on this ground and ran with some promise considering. Daddy's Boy shaped as if further will also help, with handicaps now an option. (BJ)
