Step forward CLOWANCE. Fourth in a 1m course maiden in October, she played up beforehand and was again not the quickest away. Still showing signs of greenness, she crept through the field under a confident ride and it was clear from well over a furlong out that she was going best. Having hit the front, she just had to be ridden out hands and heels in the final half-furlong and earned quotes as low as 33-1 for the Oaks (50s Stan James). There should be a good deal of improvement to come and she will take the same route as Eswarah by returning for the Swettenham Stud Stakes next month.
Montbretia, whose stable has made a flying start to the season, enjoying a high-profile double on the second day of the Craven meeting, showed enough on her sole start at two to suggest she was going to be capable of a decent level of form as a three-year-old. Soon in a good position, she moved well early in the straight, but could never quite get the lead and the winner was always doing too much inside the final furlong. This was a pleasing comeback and a standard maiden should come her way.
Miracle Seeker, placed on both her starts in fair backend maidens at two (both 1m), is a half-sister to Champion Hurdle winner Katchit and there was little doubt as to whether this kind of trip would suit. Soon in front, she was able to go just a steady pace and proved vulnerable as a result, getting left behind in the final furlong. This was a respectable effort and she can win a small maiden.
Elmaleeha, who found only Wednesday's impressive NellGwyn winner Infallible too good on her debut over 7f at Newmarket in November, is bred to relish the step up to this sort of distance, being a daughter of Derby winner Galileo, out of a 1m4f winner, but she failed to meet with expectations on this seasonal debut. She was there if good enough turning in, but could not pick up and has a bit to prove.
There was big gap back to the remainder, who were headed by handicap prospect Cinerama. She briefly threatened to get involved before getting tired andshould benefit from a fast surface.
Dunedin Star showed little on this debut, but is another who may benefit from faster ground, while Rabeera is no lost cause and another likely handicap type. [MB]
