Oldjoesaid tracked leader towards centre, driven to lead approaching final furlong, held on all out
The Trader held up in rear, switched left 2f out and strong run final furlong, finished well, not quite get up
Fullandby held up in rear, headway 2f out, not much room over 1f out, stayed on well but not pace of leading duo
King Orchisios led towards centre, ridden 2f out, headed approaching final furlong, kept on same pace inside final furlong
Hogmaneigh took keen hold early, tracked leaders, driven to challenege over 1f out, weakened inside final furlong
Elhamri led principal group on stands' side, ridden 2f out, weakened final furlong
Dazed And Amazed chased leaders, ridden 2f out, weakened over 1f out
Conquest pulled hard in touch, shaken up 2f out, little response
Stoneacre Lad soon outpaced
The Trader is used to plying his trade at a higher level and looked potentially interesting on this first run in a handicap in almost seven years. There were few going better at halfway and having been switched to the outside, he looked set to claim the winner, but as has often been the case, he was unable to go by. He has not won enough for a horse of his ability, but evidently still has the ability.
Fullandby remains 4lb higher than when last winning, but doesn't mind some cut in the ground and it was no surprise to see him run well. He usually needs a run, so this was a good start.
Hogmaneigh struggled a bit last season after winning the ‘Dash' at Epsom on Derby Day and could make no impact when upped markedly in grade on his final start last season in the Prix l'Abbaye. He would have needed this run.
Elhamri took them along in the main group, but needs a sound surface and will soon become of interest, as he is becoming well handicapped.
Conquest has always been very talented, as his victory in the 2006 Gimcrack showed, but with that talent he brings a certain level of temperament and it took a first-time visor to get him back to winning ways in a minor Listed event at Lingfield on his seasonal reappearance. His one previous run in a handicap ended disappointingly and, having refused to settle, he decided he did not fancy it once asked for his effort. He is hardly a horse to follow.
*Jimmy Fortune reported that Conquest ran too free. [MB]
