It was one of the more battle-hardened runners who took it, with the Barry Hills-trained HUZZAH getting the better of the kindly ridden Generous Thought in a close finish. Kept busy as a two-year-old, the winner stays further than this and that assured stamina saw him through. Soon prominent, he edged his way towards the stands' rail and showed a fine attitude. He reportedly does not want the ground too fast and will head to Chester's May meeting for an extended 7f handicap. His trainer traditionally does well there andhe should be capable of going close if the draw is kind to him, even off a higher mark.
Generous Thought, who shaped as though he may get further when signing off with a ready nursery win over 6f at Doncaster last backend (under this rider), was reappearing off an 8lb higher mark and did have to prove his effectiveness on this slower ground. Neither of those presented a problem and, despite being slowly away, he came with what looked a winning challenge over a furlong out. However, he seemed to get a little tired and was just run out of it, with Jamie Spencer evidently having the future in mind, as he did not resort to the whip.
These two came a few lengths clear of Keep Discovering, who ran really well off what looked a stiff mark. A 6f Folkestone maiden winner for Godolphin as a juvenile, he never got involved behind Hustle at Lingfield on his recent reappearance, but the return to turf suited and he should get 1m.
Ramona Chase gave the impression of better to come. Highly thoughtof as a juvenile, he would have found this 7f on the sharp side and it was pleasing to see him come home nicely in fourth, giving the impression he could have been even closer had things gone his way. He would not want to be going up much more in the handicap, though.
Complete outsider Clifton Dancer did a lot better than expected, showing up well from an early stage and keeping on to just be run out of the places. This was a promising effort and she can win in lower grade.
Kal Barg progressed with racing as a juvenile, showing useful handicap form after winning his maiden, but needed to have made further progress over the winter, as he was reappearing off an 11lb higher mark than when scoring at Doncaster in October. He ran well without suggesting he is a winner waiting to happen.
Choose Your Moment, a 2,000 Guineas entrant, would have needed to win well to earn his place inthe season's opening Classic, and even then it would have been stretching the imagination to see him figuring. He ran a lot better than his finishing position suggests, keeping on under a considerate ride and finding himself short of room inside the final furlong. He is an interesting one for next time.
Aye Aye Digby, a son of mudlark Captain Rio whose only win as a juvenile came when getting some cut in the ground, was reappearing in a warm heat and needed to have made strides over the winter to get involved off a mark of 85. He ran well to a point and the way he faded suggests the outing may have been needed.
Fifteen Love needed to have made progress over the winter to defy a mark of 95. His form as a juvenile was pretty useful until he flopped on soft ground in the Horris Hill over course and distance in October and he again seemed to find conditions against him.
Hustle looked the type to make a better three-year-old and confirmed that impression whenquickening up well off a steady gallop to make a winning reappearance at Lingfield. Though 6lb higher for this return to turf, there was every chance he had progressed again and he looked to hold a chance as long as the ground was not too slow. He ran poorly, though, and perhaps a sound surface if required for him to show his best form.
*Ryan Moore reported that Choose Your Moment was denied a clear run.
*Richard Quinn reported that Pravda Street hung left.
*Richard Hughes reported that Hustle stopped quickly. [MB]
