This is always a difficult race to assess, and while recent winners include the useful Dandoun and Gallant Hero they have just as often failed to ever score again. This division attracted as many well-bred colts from top stables as ever, but the fact that it went to a 40-1 chance does not augur particularly well.
TRI NATIONS is already a gelding, and on pedigree one might have expected him to want a bit further, but having been held up towards the rear he made headway up the outside and just wore down the well-fancied Tryst after a good battle through the final furlong. John Hills will look for another race at this trip next time but expects him to be racing over 1m2f before too long. However, he will not be easy to place.
Tryst is well regarded and was nicely backed. He went to the front just inside the last two furlongs but never led by more than half a length or so and was finally mastered near the finish. He shaped well though, with Ryan Moore not at all hard on him, and it will be surprising if he does not go on and win a race or two, however good or bad this race turns out overall.
King’s Charm was the only member of the field with a Group 1 entry following the withdrawal at the start of the much hyped Amaakin. He looked the part, and having been held up on the rail he was going on atthe finish despite showing quite a high head carriage, which may well have been just due to inexperience. He is from a middle-distance family and is entered for the Irish Derby.
Never Ending Tale and Moonquake were both involved in the battle for the minor placings and finished well clear of the rest. Moonquake looks the more interesting of the pair, as he led briefly when outsider Hapi weakened and he wasn’t given at all a hard race once he started to feel the pinch. He was one of the nicest in the field and it will be surprising if he does not do a fair bit better. (GD)
