Those were the odds still available about the once-raced INFALLIBLE prior to racing, but she had been nicely backed over the last couple of weeks and the price collapsed when she took this field apart and won easily in a time fractionally quicker than Stimulation's earlier in the Free Handicap.
Having been green in the preliminaries, especially when asked to begin the canter down to the start, the winner was slow into her stride from her stall towards the wide outside and raced at the back of the field through the first half of the race. However, the response was impressive when she was asked to close, and having joined long-time leader Kylayne around the furlong pole she quickened clear in style, despite continuing to edge right.
It was the manner in which she won rather than what she beat that saw her Guineas price cut to just 3-1 with Corals (those initially offering 5-1 and even 6-1 were soon under pressure), for one could not help but be impressed. The form would not yet compare with that of Natagora for instance, or perhaps even the same owner's May Hill winner Spacious, but it was a massive step up on last year's maiden race form and she can be expected to improve again next time. The stable's 2005 Nell Gwyn winner Karen's Caper was only fourth in the Guineas, but this one looks capable of improving on that.
Kylayne looked exposed after ten runs as a juvenile, but with a BHA mark of 93 there were plenty worse in the race and she came here well tuned up for a prominent display. She belied her odds with a terrific effort from the front, which saw her finish a clear second, but Paul d'Arcy will not aim her too high next time and will look instead for a Listed race.
Rosaleen, only seventh off 93 in a nursery here last autumn, was slowly away and didn't get the best of runs yet finished nicely from well off the pace. She has clearly trained on.
Spinning Lucy ran well, too, although having raced prominently towards the far rail she didn't get home, whileNijoom Dubai, who had been off the track since her shock win in the Albany at Royal Ascot, never got in a blow after being held up. However, she was not disgraced, and the stable has a stronger Guineas candidate in Nahoodh.
Rinterval is from a stable that is well forward and seemed well fancied, but she failed to run up to her juvenile form.
Shabiba, whose dam Misterah won this race in 2002, was another who did not last home. This was a disappointing return from one of the more interesting fillies in the race.
Albabilia, who had decent juvenile form and had already had a race in Dubai, was also disappointing. So, too, was the previously unbeaten Quiet Elegance, although this was a step up in class and she is a half-sister to Reverence, so might be a sprinter. She was a bit keen too post and again in the early stages.
Jamie Spencer reported Anosti hung right. (GD)
