Newcomer PAMPAS CAT has no big entries and seemed unfancied in the betting, but he won in great style and heads now for the Chester Vase.
Never worse than third or fourth, racing on the rail behind front-running Zhebe, the winner burst through the field into the Dip and was soon clear. John Gosden said afterwards that he was one of the yard's fitter horses, but he is open to improvement nevertheless and looks a decent prospect.
Daraahem had the benefit of a bit of experience at two and he was nicely backed in the morning. He was up there from the start, too, racing mainly in second, and while he had no answer to the winner's change of pace he was always holding on to second. He should have no trouble winning a similar race.
Checklow is a big strong colt who looked as if the experience would do him good. He showed plenty of promise in third, having been held up on the outer until making headway from halfway, and he looks a certain future winner. Entries in the Derby and Irish Derby suggest he is held in high regard, and it would be no surprise if he turnedout to be the best horse in the race.
Savarain wasn't well away and ultimately shaped as if he needed this first run of the season. This third run qualified him for a mark and his future may well lie in handicaps now, although he showed plenty of promise last year and is another with a Derby entry.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Tale Of Two Cities, a brother to High Chaparral, was easily the pick on juvenile form, but having been close enough from the start he was going nowhere in the final furlong. He is obviously better than this, but has yet to confrm his debut promise and hardly looks one of the stable's stars.
Further back, dual all-weather second Seattle Storm was too keen for his own good through the early stages, but should be more relaxed with this race under his belt. He is qualified for a mark now. (GD)
