PENNY ISLAND had not run on the Flat since 2005 and had managed just one placing in seven outings as a young horse, but he was fit from hurdling and showed that, as one would expect, he has strengthened up since he was last seen in this grade to win narrowly from Effigy.
He may not have beaten a lot, but he should be open to further improvement as he gains in experience of Flat racing.
Effigy, who ran several good races in defeat last season, returned to action in good heart and, though he again met defeat, is entitled to be sharper for this first outing in almost six months and there is surely a race or two to be won with him this time round.
Magdalene did best of those who raced close to the pace set by Willow Dancer (whose best trip has yet to be established) and this distance suited her better than the 1m4f she raced over at Folkestone a fortnight ago.
Stalking Tiger, who had shown his best form when third over an extended mile at Windsor last October, was too keen for his own good to halfway here and faded out of contention in the later stages. He should get this trip in time, but needs to settle better to do so.
