This first division of the maiden hurdle went very much with the book as WOOLCOMBE FOLLY finally dropped his maiden tag after having to settle for the runner-up spot on his last three appearances. This did not tell us a whole lot new about him as he was entitled to win the way he did. Connections considered the faster ground helped him here and he will be kept on the go for now.
Qanta De Thaix has shown gradual progress in his three starts over hurdles and there is a race in him somewhere as this will put him in line for a mark. Given that he should come on again from here he should not have too much difficulty in getting his head in front at some stage. The stewards looked at the running and riding of Qanta De Thaix but after hearing evidence from Tony McCoy and David Pipe their explanations were noted. McCoy said his instructions were to follow the favourite and make his challenge two out. He was happy with the tactics until he was baulked by two loose horses at the end of the back straight which prevented him carrying out those instructions. He added that his mount had only stayed on in the closing stages and had not been helped by theslow pace. Pipe said that the gelding is usually held up in his races as he has tended to be keen.
Ghallab was the best of these on the Flat and he is another who can do well over the summer possibly after another run that will see him handicapped.
If there is a downside to the bare form it is Knapp Bridge Boy who had pulled up the last twice but his finishing position owes more to the patient rides behind rather than anything else.
