Analyis of the race

Ascot’s policy of sacrificing quality in the hope of quantity certainly paid off here, with this 0-125 handicap chase attracting a solid 17-runner field.

KEW JUMPER was representing a stable very much in form, and the nine-year-old maintained thatwith a gutsy success in a race in which few got competitive. Two good runs in March - one of which was a winning one - suggested that he would go close here, and he did not disappoint. The handicapper will react to this win, but Kew Jumper looks capable of continuing his upward curve.

Jaunty Times has often run well at Ascot and he did so again, defying some characteristic mistakes to nick second on the line. Indeed, it is not inconceivable that he would have won but for clouting a whole host of fences in the second half of the contest.

Umbrella Man had been out of form, but he bounced back to take a good fourth, one place in front of the novice Busy Isit, who got the fourth fence all wrong but regained his composure to run close to his mark.

Kilrogan was beaten a long way back in sixth, but beaten much further was Celtic Son, who no longer runs like a happy horse.
