One that fits into the latter category is MAMLOOK, who proved a major flop in the Fred Winter Hurdle when beating only three home. Perhaps because of that, he was sent off at 20-1 here, but he belied those odds to deliver a classy display under his top-weight burden. Nothing travelled better than he did, and he looked set to score with a distance to spare when cruising into the final flight. However, he was slowly away from the hurdle and then only got on top close home, but that does not detract from a fine effort.
It would be no surprise if the winner was allowed to start from a nice racing weight in the Swinton Hurdle next month, while he will be an obvious contender for some of the better novice chases next term.
Shavansky, one of six last-time-out winners in the field, was going almost as easily as Mamlook for much of the race, but he arguably threw away his chance by getting three of the last four flights ever so slightly wrong. This, though, was much his best effort and he can build on this to win plenty more races.
Callisto Moon was competing for the 13th time this season, but he evidently retains enthusiasm and ran well, as most definitely did Doubly Guest, who ran much better than his finishing position would imply. Along with Mud Monkey, he went off like the clappers, so much so that the pair raced clear of everything else until turning for home. That he lasted for as long as he did does him credit, as does the fact that he was not beaten too far. He might well be good enough to win a quite valuable handicap from around his current mark.
Zanir has had a good first season over hurdles, but he was just a little disappointing here, although not as disappointing as Stagehand, Distiller and Hibiki. That trio all underperformed, as did Daltaban, who failed to progress from the rear.
