POP had shown his appreciation of good ground when winning over 2m3f at Market Rasen last month, and this stiff track brought his stamina into play ashe defied his penalty in the style of a horse who is improving with every run.
Pterodactyl, a capable performer at up to 1m4f on the Flat in France, was undone by some untidy late jumps when beaten by Dip Anchor on his hurdles debut at Taunton in January and then failed to get home over 2m4f at Chepstow the following month after racing up with the pace.
He was dropped out on this occasion and, though not helped by a slight mistake at the fifth, his rider continued to hold on to the horse and did not start to shake him up until after the second-last. Pterodactyl ran on strongly for him from that point, but Pop had got first run on him and the short run-in worked in his favour. Pterodactyl's rider was adjudged to have ridden an ill-judged race and suspended for 10 days. The horse obviously does not need to improve much on this effort to be winning..
Realism, easy winner of a maiden hurdle at Newcastle in February, may not have been suited by this track and was in trouble turning for home.
