MEYDAN PRINCESS was hard to assess on her Lingfield maiden win, but there seemed to be no great confidence in her in the market even though she was making her handicap debut from a tempting 78. Held up in last place, she was still at the back as they straightened up but then produced a blistering run up the outside to collar favourite Wigram’s Turn half a furlong out and come away to win in style. Ryan Moore told connections afterwards that she had no right to win like that from such a position, and it would be no surprise if she proved Listed class in due course. She certainly looked one to follow.
Wigram’s Turn was considered well handicapped at the start of the year and has simply been unlucky to have now run into two rivals who were even better treated, a gamble here first time out having been thwarted by Thebes. Having got a good position from stall 1, he went to the front 2f out looking very much the likeliest winner, and he beat the rest handsomely, but he was no match for the unexposed winner. Compensation awaits.
King’s Icon, making his AW debut, has yet to fulfil the promise of last year’s Goodwood win, but Farthermost might be worth another chance, as easily his best efforts last year were from the front and no attempt was made to repeat those tactics.
