Cape Hawk with leader, led over 2f out, switched to rail over 1f out, soon quickened clear, comfortably
Nice To Know tracked leaders on inner, driven to challenge when hampered by winner over 1f out, kept on to take 2nd again 1f out, no real chance
Dichoh dwelt, took keen hold and soon tracked leaders, effort 2f out, disputed 2nd 1f out, faded near finish
Danski pressed leading pair, ridden over 2f out, outpaced from over 1f out, kept on
Cross The Line held up in midfield, shaken up 2f out, stayed on final furlong, nearest finish
Rambling Light raced on outer, well in touch, close enough 2f out, soon outpaced under pressure, faded near finish
Councellor made most to over 2f out, weakened final furlong
Mount Hermon tracked leaders, under pressure over 2f out, lost place soon after, no danger over 1f out
Pendulum Star held up in last trio, ridden and kept on same pace final 2f, no chance
Fiefdom held up well in rear, some progress from 2f out, no headway 1f out, faded
Bold Marc held up well in rear, ridden and no significant headway final 2f
Mcnairobi dwelt, took keen hold, held up in midfield, no impression on leaders over 1f out, faded final furlong
Master Pegasus held up in last trio, progress on inner when not clear run over 1f out, no chance after
Bee Stinger held up in rear, ridden over 3f out, soon struggling
Dudley Docker dwelt, pulled hard in rear, rapid progress on wide outside over 3f out, weakened rapidly over 2f out
On paper this wasa wide-open handicap, but CAPE HAWK was very heavily backed and proceeded to win in the style his odds suggested he might, although he would have had more to do if he had not hampered the runner-up as he made his effort up the inside after the intersection. An improver last season, when he signed off with fourth place in the final of this race, he broke well from his stall against the inside rail and was always going strongly, bang up with the pace. He was in front just over 2f out and clear through the final furlong. The Royal Hunt Cup could well come into the reckoning now.
Nice To Know, drawn next to the winner, was just trying to poke her nose up the winner’s inner when she had to be snatched up, and although she got going again for a clear second the damage was done. She has never stopped improving since joining Gary Moore, and this was another step up.
Cross The Line has a good record here, but he had been off the track nearly six months and was held up in a race in which nothing managed to come from far off the pace.
Rambling Light, lightly raced and keen to post, ran respectably from stall 1 after nine months off, and last year’s winner Councellor was not disgraced off a much stiffer mark, although he had the run of the race up front.
Hold-up horses further back can probably be forgiven,. Among them Master Pegasus was making an effort up the inside when he was checked.
*Liam Jones reported that Dudley Docker ran too free.*Darryll Holland reported that Pendulum Star was bumped on the bend.
