COMPTON CHARLIE had been off the track nine months since finishing second in a seller last year, but Jonny Portman reported he had come back a stronger, happier horse, and his win here was not unexpected. He is no star, but should continue paying his way at this sort of level.
Street Life had a penalty for last week’s Nottingham win, but was still a pound well in. However, the short straight here does not play to his strengths and, having been last turning in, he could not quite get there. Hewill be seen to better advantage back at tracks like Nottingham, Leicester and Yarmouth, or even Windsor, where he gained his first three wins.
Ardglass, off the track 451 days, got carried left in the straight and wasn’t disgraced considering his long absence.
Front-runner Meohmy led until the winner took over, but she was hanging left in the straight.
Irish challenger Sandokan, formerly with Barney Curley, like his stablemate in the previous race, was running away three furlongs out, but he had not run for 1,169 days and when he came under pressure straightening for home he had no more to give.
