Proper held up in rear, still last and plenty to do over 2f out, ridden and rapid headway to lead over 1f out, came clear inside final furlong, readily
Dakiyah in touch, ridden and stayed on to challenge 2f out, kept on to chase winner well inside final furlong but no chance
Boz tracked leading duo, ridden to take slight lead approaching final 2f, headed and outpaced approaching final furlong
Folio in rear, took keen hold, headway over 2f out, stayed on inside final furlong, not trouble leading trio
Garafena chased leader, ridden over 2f out, weakened approaching final furlong
Lord Theo led, narrowly headed but every chance approaching final 2f, weakened final furlong
Safari Sundowner ridden 3f out, towards rear most of way
Pearl soon ridden in rear, never in contention
The race was therefore set up for a closer and PROPER, who was winning races over 7f last year, confirmed his stamina for this much longer trip in no uncertain terms, making smooth headway up the inside and powering clear of some bang in-form rivals.
The winner was meant to be going for a novice hurdle at Cheltenham next week, but jumping plans will be shelved for this four-year-old now as there are plenty of middle-distance races around here.
Dakiyah ran a solid race in defeat given she doesn’t look too well handicapped on this surface on balance, while Boz was looking to complete a six-timer returning from a break, but having looked a big threat two out he could only keep on at the one pace in the closing stages.
Safari Sundowner was the big disappointment of the race. He was never a factor and this wasn’t his true running. He might need a break after his busy spell.
