HONEST JOHN had shown promise on a similarly flat track at Doncaster first time out and more than confirmed it here, making headway from 3f out and staying on to lead towards the finish. This was a fine effort, beating two runners from stables with excellent records in this type of contest and he is a useful prospect, whether his immediate future lies on the Flat or over hurdles.
Touch Of Irish is more stoutly bred than the winner but had already shown the speed to win two of these and he ran a fine race on this step up in class, leading over 2f out until towards the finish. He is another decent prospect for the future, as is Cape Tribulation, who has more of a Flat pedigree and who had looked good in winning each of his two previous starts. He came to have just about every chance inside the final furlong but could not quite get to the front.
Charity Lane had appeared to revel in testing conditions when winning at Ayr on his previous start but did not look quite so effective on this surface, leading over 4f out and weakening in the final 1f. Peters Pride was not at all disgraced after a layoff of more than a year. Dayia, twice a winner in mares' company, could not get into contention on this first try against male rivals.
Conditions were not designed to show Blencathra Bay to best advantage. Have You Seen Me was well behind and may have had something amiss. (DC)
