Voy Por Ustedes was a different horse from Cheltenham last month, back to his best with optimum conditions, most importantly the sound surface. He jumped and travelled well, which he patently hadn't done at Cheltenham when blown away by Master Minded. Everyone, including the handicapper, rightly eulogised that performance by Master Minded and this effort might finally see Voy Por Ustedes get the rating in the high 170s he deserves, as he has beaten a good enough yardstick in the 160-plus rated Tamarinbleu.
The winner's connections plan to stick to this as a minimum tripand the King George has come into sight, with the reasoning that he has run strong races at Kempton, winning the Desert Orchid twice, including last year when the ground was not totally in his favour. Given his ground conditions and his battling qualities, he will be an interesting contender - bookmakers make him just 6-1 (Stan James) - and he would be one of the highest rated in the race.
As much as Voy Por Ustedes relished the rapidly drying conditions, Master Minded intermittently looked uneasy, certainly not jumping or travelling with the zest he showed at Cheltenham. That might be as much to do with a change of tactics. He set off last and was put immediately on the back foot off the fast pace by getting in close to the first, possibly frightening himself, as he was careful over the second. He telegraphed his second-last boneshaker first time and was again ragged over the same set of fences down the back straight. He still moved up strongly around the home bend and there was everything to play for before it simply looked like he ran out of stamina, which is what connections reported. He was 12 lengths down halfway up the run-in before being eased to accentuate his beating. He remains the one to beat over 2m. It could also turn out that like another top 2m chaser from France, Edredon Bleu, he is happiest bowling along and putting his rivals under pressure. A return to those tactics could restore his air of invincibility.
The 2006 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Newmill has not won for over a year, but he is another who has had to take on the best. His jockey did well to keep the partnership intact at the third, which the horse took by the roots. Even though Tamarinbleu was a sitting target up the straight, Newmill could not make any inroads and had a fight to keep the poor-jumping Mister McGoldrick and Yes Sir at bay. It may be that he needs softer ground, especially as he gets older.
Mister McGoldrick has never looked entirely at home here and he lost his good position going past the post first time for no apparent reason. He then clouted most of the fences in the back straight, so deserves some credit for keeping up the chase of Newmill, albeit at a distance behind the principals.
Yes Sir was outclassed but not disgraced as he plugged on off the home turn to worry the other two strugglers before tiring into the last. He was woolly in his coat and looking just in need of the run. As he enjoys the summer season, he remains one to note back in handicap company off his plummeting mark. [BJ]
