STAN did not run at Cheltenham and has had his net cast in shallower waters of late but he had run well to finish sixth in this race 12 months previously - he was swamped by the closers in the latter stages after leading 3 out that day and wasridden with more patience this time, in touch, making headway 4 out and leading going to the final fence, holding on well under a capable ride. This test suited him a good deal better than the 3m over which he had been racing on his two previous starts but the good pace was in his favour.
Dev deserves an awful lot of credit as he had gone up 9lb for winning a less-than-red-hot contest at Sandown yet ran an absolute blinder, leading to 4 out at a decent pace, outpaced after a less-than-fluent jump 3 out and looking booked for no better than fourth in the closing stages but rallying splendidly late on. This was a fine effort by a relatively lightly raced novice, and one which suggests there are more chases to be won with him.
Lennon ran well on a track that suits him, leading from 4 out until after 2 out, while Magic Sky deserves plenty of credit as he did best of those coming from well off the pace, keeping on for a very creditable fifth - the blinkers appeared to help him.
Few others got into contention, with Andreas keeping on for a one-paced sixth, ahead of Tramantano and Marcel, who lost his chance with a mistake at the sixth fence.
The 2007 winner Bambi De L’Orme threatened brieflyin the straight but is higher in the weights now. Of the rest Wanango could never challenge while Desert Quest lost all chance with a bad mistake at the eighth fence. [DC]
