Watamu took keen hold, held up in last pair, headway on outer 3f out, ridden to lead 1f out, ran on strongly
Paktolos steadied start, held up in rear, switched right and bumped rival over 2f out, soon hard ridden, hung left from over 1f out, ran on to chase winner inside final furlong, no impression last 100yds
Motarjm held up in touch in midfield, headway to chase leaders over 2f out, stayed on under pressure final furlong
Prince Sabaah tracked leaders, ridden and slightly outpaced 2f out, kept on under pressure final furlong
Bahar Shumaal took keen hold, led, hard pressed over 2f out, headed 1f out, outpaced final furlong
Zero Cool held up towards rear, headway over 2f out, not much room from over 1f out, kept on same pace
John Terry chased leader, challeneged just over 2f out, one pace final furlong
Tartan Tie slowly into stride, soon in touch, ridden 4f out, weakening when bumped over 2f out, no chance after
He had dropped out in the closing stages in the Rosebery Handicap at Kempton seven days earlier on his first outing in over year, but had clearly come out of that race well and was always travelling nicely held up off the pace. He was asked to make his progress turning for home and quickened up nicely to lead a furlong out and soon had the race in the bag.
He is only lightly raced despitebeing seven and could well add to this victory.
Paktolos had gone well over 1m5f on his last visit to the course under Jamie Spencer and put up a reasonable effort on his first outing on the Flat in 280 days. He was held up and gave the weakening Tartan Tie a hefty bump over 2f out when asked to pick up before staying on well in the closing stages.
Motarjm had won his last three races at Wolverhampton and was racing off a 5lb higher mark than when scoring last month, but acquitted himself well against this tougher opposition. He was soon chasing the leader and kept on well enough in the final furlong to suggest he could be winning again back at his favourite venue.
Prince Sabaah was always close up on the inside and kept on in the closing stages without suggesting he was going to win, and Bahaar Shumaal had made the running until headed by the winner and ran creditably too.
Zero Cool could come on for his first outing in three months and John Terry was soon tracking the leader and travelling quite well but proved a little disappointing when asked for his effort in the final furlong, as he didn’t find as anticipated.
