Analyis of the race

Several interesting sorts on show here, among them CAPTAIN WEBB, who won a 1m Brighton maiden on his only start as a juvenile. He had made all that day, but was happy to accept a lead from Shannersburg here and then drove for home when that one weakened. He did hang left under the whip, but kept on well enough for all that and looks just the type to continue improving through the season.

Ballochroy, who had won on soft ground over a mile at Haydock last year, is bred to be suited by significantly further this time round and this was an encouraging start to her season. He was done no favours by the winner in the closing stages but was beaten on merit. However, time may show that he faced a stiff task in trying to give 3lb to the Johnston colt.

No To Trident, who got up close home to win a 1m2f Doncaster maiden last month, ran creditably off a high enough mark, reversing last season's York maiden placings with Bright Falcon. He is bred to be suited by further, and runs as if he will get at least 1m4f.

Bright Falcon, who had made most over a mile at York last October, lost ground by rearing up in the stalls here and then hung when asked for his effort 2f out. The ground may not have been right for him, but this was still a disappointing effort for a horse with entries in the Dante and Derby.
