Shipmaster, who won his maiden here two years ago, was fit from hurdling and showed that he too has improved since he was last seen on the Flat with a bold run. He came under pressure well before the home turn, but kept answering his rider’s calls and, though touched off late on, could not be seriously faulted on this effort.
Spanish Hidalgo was progressive through last season, winning a Listed race in Italy in October, but he was just a little too free for his own good early on here and that cost him late on as he could not sustain his challenge from the furlong mark. This run seems sure to bring him on.
Veenwouden, who ran a couple of cracking races last autumn, ran no sort of race here and has evidently not come to herself. Judgement is best reserved on her until she gets some sun on her back.
