Air Chief tracked leader after 2f, led over 2f out and kicked on, hard pressed inside final furlong, just held on
Zen Factor held up in last pair, progress 3f out, chased winner well over 1f out, closed gradually final furlong, just failed
Tamrai Dancer led at decent pace, ridden and headed over 2f out, left behind by leading pair over 1f out
Mganga slowly into stride, settled in last pair, ridden over 3f out, soon weakened, well behind final 2f
General Tufto tracked leader 2f, ridden over 3f out, soon weakened, tailed off
Morestead dropped to last after 2f, ridden well over 3f out, soon beaten, tailed off
Ten Spot close up on outer until weakened rapidly over 3f out, well tailed off
AIR CHIEF, never previously closer than sixth, but gelded since his last start, took it up from Tamrai Dancer starting up the straight, but only justheld on from Zen Factor in a finish that saw the first two go a long way clear. The stiffer test seemed to suit him.
Zen Factor had shown a bit in maidens at two but he has clearly improved, and the winning margin was so narrow that he might well have won if his rider had not almost lost his right iron when beginning his challenge. Connections feel he would prefer a more galloping track.
There was a huge gap back to Tamrai Dancer, who appeared to have plenty going for her, as she revelled in the mud at two and represented a stable that has made a cracking start to the turf campaign. On breeding, she looked likely to be suited by this stiffer test of stamina, but having made the running she was easily brushed aside starting up the straight. She still beat the rest a long way.
