This was a career-best effort from Wodhill Schnaps and, while recent efforts had not offered much evidence of progression, it will be disappointing if he does not manage another win in coming weeks after this runaway success.
Penel, who had shown nothing here five weeks ago on his return to action after a five-month break, turned in a much more encouraging effort this time. This was comparable form to that shown when he won a claimer at Newcastle last August, and if he can find a little more improvement then he should be able to win a little handicap such as this.
Blue Empire was the disappointing horse of the race. He was closing handicapped with Wodhill Schnaps on running here last month, but he was inclined to run about under pressure and trainer John Harris felt the strong early pace may have found out his horse.
